Last month, we partnered with our friends at QuarantineCon to create another memorable virtual event—this time specifically focused on tech careers. Hundreds of people in our Jopwell community were able to learn valuable information about recruiting processes, tech roles, and the POC experience working with some of the worlds largest tech platforms.

Participating companies included UBS, Facebook, Google, Coursera, and Splunk with keynote speakers from Google and Zoom. We spoke with Marcus Mitchell, Engineering Director at Google, Damien Hooper Campbell, Chief Diversity Officer at Zoom. Other speakers included Lelia Hampton, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science professional, Vanessa Whatley, UX Researcher & Strategist at Google, Ruben Harris, Founder & CEO of Career Karma, and Thulani Vereen, Software Engineer at Jobcase, Inc.

Attendees learned how to navigate in the tech space and the different paths that you can explore in the field from professionals at various levels in their career. After the speakers' sessions, members had a chance to network with other professionals including employees and recruiters from each of our partner companies. We've collected some useful learnings from the event that can be applied to anyone's professional career, no matter what level you're on. Here are a few takeaways from the virtual fair.

  1. Stay humble in whatever position you hold and are seeking, it's an attitude that sits well with recruiters.
  2. When deciding on your career path, it's important to remember that things move quickly. You should aximize learning opportunities, and always be open to learning new things.
  3. Not every career path comes naturally or easily, it's important to keep pushing and stay inspired when you're doing something that is fueling you.
  4. Take advantage of all the resources that are online, you should always be seeking to become an expert in your interests and your career.
  5. Make sure to ask the RIGHT questions. Even if you have the job, you should still be learning and gaining knowledge.
